UC Leuven-Limburg
Universities of Applied Sciences UCLL are based in Belgium and offer numerous graduate programmes, professional Bachelor’s programmes and advanced Bachelor’s programmes on 8 campuses in Limburg and Flemish Brabant. With over 15,000 students and 1,750 employees, UCLL is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Flanders. UCLL is active in the fields of teacher training, management, technology, health and well-being and combines its educational mission with practice-based research and services.
UCLL’s Research and Expertise comprises 8 centres of expertise that strive for excellence in research, real-life solutions and lifelong learning.
The expertise centre taking part in this project, Inclusive Society, builds relevant and scientific knowledge on inclusion, participation and diversity. We focus on four lines of research where research is combined with services, lifelong learning and tailor-made solutions.
– Inter-Action and Dialogue emphasises intercultural and empathic dialogue with the aim of positive change. In our superdiverse society with multilingualism as the norm, we pay special attention to vulnerable citizens.
– Inclusive Learning and Collaboration focuses on educational research on powerful learning environments for all learners, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and diversity in (higher) education.
– Participation and Accessibility focuses on social issues concerning the place of the Internet in care and welfare, specifically on the themes of media literacy, online help, e-inclusion and screen addiction.
– Discrimination and Equality looks at issues and tensions in our society concerning (anti)racism, (de)colonisation, multiculturalism, equal opportunities and social cohesion. Throughout the various content topics in this expertise center, we pay special attention to exclusion mechanisms.
We move on a continuum from special target groups to the universal design “for all”. Characteristics of our centre of expertise:
– We employ a participatory and empowering research methodology
– We always work powerfully and diversity-sensitively
– We start from concrete needs
– We draw inspiration from national and international models, literature and research
– We work in co-creation with (vulnerable) citizens, schools, organizations and companies
